National Ballet of Canada Alice reviews - Toronto

It works! Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s reworking of his 2011 mega-ballet, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, transforms a delightful but somewhat unwieldy adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s famous children’s story into a more evenly paced and irresistibly captivating dance show.

In Trio, Tomasson captures the varied emotional tones of Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence in an "elegant and engrossing" (Los Angeles Times) production. San Francisco Ballet Choreographer in Residence Yuri Possokhov's RAkU, set to an original score by Shinji Eshima, is "a gripping, virtuoso piece" (San Francisco Examiner). In Sir Frederick Ashton's lighthearted and fleet-footed pas de deux Voices of Spring, a ballerina and her partner follow the swirling melodies of the waltz. Christopher Wheeldon's Number Nine, featuring a large ensemble of 24 dancers, is set to an exhilarating score by Michael Torke.

The Suzanne Farrell Ballet

Behold the works of Balanchine through the eyes of his muse…

The Kennedy Center's own The Suzanne Farrell Ballet returns in their 11th annual season for seven dazzling performances. A renowned ballerina and George Balanchine protégée, Suzanne Farrell has become a "tireless Balanchine preservationist and one of the foremost interpreters of the great choreographer's work" (The New York Times). Her company presents two all-Balanchine programs, including company premieres of Valse-Fantaisie, the Intermezzo from Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet, and Prodigal Son. The engagement also brings the company premiere of the inventive Danses Concertantes, plus Divertimento No. 15, presented by the company as a full ballet for the first time since 2005.  Both programs will close with Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, the ballet featured in Richard Rodgers's musical On Your Toes.

POB's @VincentChaillet talks about dancing on pointe

For Marie-Agnès Gillot's new creation for Paris Opera Ballet, Sous Apparences, she put both the men and the women on pointe for the whole duration of the piece. To make things even harder, the floor was intentionally slippery. Here's an interesting interview with Vincent Chaillet about the experience:
By the second and third weeks of rehearsal, the men were suffering badly from blisters and bleeding toenails.“We see that of course with the women, but I used to think they got used to it,” Mr. Chaillet said. “Now I understand that it always hurts!”
